Spartans down Everman to make playoffs

Sometimes you have to make your own luck, and Centennial’s boys basketball team did just that Tuesday night defeating Everman, 50-41, in both team’s District 9-5A finale to clinch a playoff berth.

The Spartans (8-6) first win ever over Everman coupled with Arlington Seguin’s 56-54 overtime victory over Granbury clinched third place for Centennial. The Spartans will face Mansfield Timberview, the No. 8 team in the TABC poll, Monday or Tuesday in a Class 5A Region II bi-district playoff game.

“We did all that we could tonight to put ourselves in position to make the playoffs,” Centennial coach Jeff Carroll said.

On senior night, Centennial’s four seniors all scored and made contributions in the program’s historic win. Hayden Smith scored 11 points, Zach Elliot finished with five points, Reese Walker added three points and Brock Jenkins had two points.

“I’m proud of our guys,” Carroll said. “I’m proud of the intensity they showed tonight. The seniors have led us all year long and it’s only fitting that they led us tonight. I can’t be prouder of the seniors and the job they did.”

Junior Kelton Tezeno led the Spartans with 12 points and sophomore London Zavala scored 10 points. Both underclassmen hit a pair of three-pointers that helped Centennial overcome Everman’s second-quarter lead.

“London has been great all year long” Carroll said. “He’s a true team player. He knows that when we call on him he has to be big and he always has. He does a great job for us.”

Friday night, Centennial halted a four-game losing streak with a 61-45 win at Joshua.

Anthony Hunter and Smith each scored 10 points and Nate Adcox finished with seven points. In all, 11 Spartans scored in the win.

Centennial led 14-6 after one quarter and led 26-21 at halftime. The Spartans’ defense clamped down on the Owls in the third quarter, limiting them to eight points. Centennial led 48-27 after three quarters.
